Selecting the correct hydraulic hose is critical for safety, performance and total cost of ownership. In this guide we walk through the five key factors every buyer should consider before placing an OEM order.
1. Pressure Rating
Always specify the working pressure and burst pressure required by your hydraulic system. SAE 100R1 / EN853 1SN is suitable for medium pressure, SAE 100R2 / EN853 2SN for high pressure, and EN856 4SP / 4SH for very high pressure. The hose working pressure must exceed the maximum system pressure, including spikes.
2. Hose Size (Inside Diameter)
Hose ID determines flow velocity. Too small and you get excessive pressure drop and heat; too large and you waste money and add weight. A good rule of thumb is to keep oil velocity below 6 m/s for pressure lines and 3 m/s for suction lines.
3. Standard Reference
The two most common standards are SAE J517 (American) and EN 853 / 856 (European). They are largely interchangeable: 1SN ≈ SAE 100R1AT, 2SN ≈ SAE 100R2AT, 4SP/4SH have no exact SAE equivalent.
4. Fluid Compatibility
Standard NBR tubes work with mineral-oil-based hydraulic fluids. For synthetic fluids, biodegradable oils or high-temperature service, specify EPDM, FKM or other special compounds.
5. Environmental Conditions
Consider temperature range, abrasion, UV exposure, ozone, and chemical splash. Mining and construction applications usually require MSHA-approved flame-resistant covers.
